Meditation: Where to Start

Life can feel like it’s moving a hundred miles an hour — between work, family, and everything else on your plate, slowing down probably feels impossible some days.

If you’ve ever caught yourself thinking, “I just need a minute to breathe,” meditation might be exactly what you need.

The best part? You don’t have to do it perfectly. You don’t have to sit cross-legged on a mountain for an hour.
Meditation can be simple. It can be yours. And you can start today.

First things first: What is meditation, really?

A lot of people think meditation means clearing your mind completely. (Spoiler: that’s not actually the goal.)

Meditation is just about practicing where your mind goes.
It’s noticing your breath, your body, your thoughts — without beating yourself up when your mind wanders.

Some days you’ll feel calm. Some days your brain will be all over the place.
Both are totally normal.

Start small — even smaller than you think.

If you’re new to meditation, forget trying to sit for 30 minutes.
Start with just 2 to 5 minutes. That’s it.

Find a comfy spot — your bed, your couch, even parked in your car — close your eyes if that feels good, and just breathe.

When (not if) your mind drifts off to dinner plans or the work email you forgot to send, gently bring it back to your breath.
No judgment. No stress. Just try again.

Find a style that feels right for you.

There’s no one way to meditate. Seriously.

Here are a few easy ways to start:

  • Breath Awareness: Just notice your inhales and exhales.
  • Guided Meditation: Listen to a calming voice walk you through it (apps like Calm or Insight Timer are great).
  • Body Scan: Tune into different parts of your body, head to toe.
  • Walking Meditation: Go for a slow walk and really notice each step.

Play around with it. See what fits. Meditation should feel like a support, not another chore.

Make it part of your everyday life.

You don’t need a big ceremony to meditate.
Try stacking it onto something you already do:

  • After your morning coffee ☕
  • Right before you pick up the kids from practice 🏀
  • When you’re winding down before bed 💤

Little moments add up — and over time, they make a difference.

Give yourself some grace.

Learning anything new is messy at first. Meditation is no different.

Some days it’ll feel great. Other days you’ll feel restless or frustrated.
That’s part of it. Honestly, showing up anyway is where the magic happens.

Even a few minutes a day can help you feel a little more grounded, a little less stressed, and a little more like yourself.

One last thing:

You don’t have to change who you are.
Meditation is just a way to come back to yourself — to the part of you that’s been there all along, just waiting for a little breathing room.
