Getting Started

Your First Visit

A clear, comfortable guide to beginning counseling with Core Counseling South Jersey.

Starting counseling can feel like a big step, especially when you are not sure what to expect. Our goal is to make the process comfortable, clear, and centered around what you need.

Getting started is simple

  1. Reach out

Call us, request a call back, or schedule online. You do not need to know exactly which service or counselor is right for you before contacting us.

  2. We will listen

We will learn what brings you to counseling, answer your initial questions, discuss availability and insurance, and help identify a counselor who may be a good fit.

  3. Begin your journey

Your counselor will create a supportive, confidential space where you can talk openly and work toward goals that matter to you.

Before your first appointment

After scheduling, you will receive access to our secure client portal. Please complete the requested intake forms before your session so your counselor can understand important background information and use your appointment time well.

  • Complete your intake forms in the secure portal
  • Have your insurance card and identification available
  • Write down questions or concerns you would like to discuss
  • For virtual sessions, choose a private space and test your connection

What happens during the first session?

Your first session is a conversation, not a test. Your counselor will ask about what brought you in, what has been happening in your life, relevant history, and what you hope will improve. You can share at a pace that feels comfortable and ask questions at any time.

Together, you may begin identifying goals and discussing a treatment approach. It is also an opportunity to notice how you feel with the counselor. A trusting relationship is an important part of effective therapy.

How long are appointments?

Most counseling sessions are approximately 50 to 60 minutes. The recommended frequency depends on your needs, goals, availability, and clinical recommendations. Your counselor will discuss this with you directly.

Insurance and payment

Coverage varies by insurance plan. We encourage you to confirm behavioral-health benefits, copays, deductibles, and any authorization requirements with your insurance provider. Our team can also explain accepted plans and available payment options.

After your first visit

You and your counselor will decide on appropriate next steps. Some people feel relief after finally talking about what has been happening; others need time to process. Both reactions are normal. Therapy is a collaborative process, and your questions and feedback are always welcome.

If the counselor does not feel like the right fit

Finding the right therapeutic relationship matters. If something does not feel right, let us know. We can talk through your concerns and, when appropriate, help connect you with another counselor on our team.
